Charles S. Farnsworth papers, 1899-1943.

The Charles S. Farnsworth Papers consist of correspondence and photographs relating to Farnsworth's period of military service in Alaska. Early correspondence, 1899-1911, primarily outgoing, includes monthly reports, progress reports written in a narrative style, and Farnsworth's personal letters to his family. These letters contain descriptions of life at Fort Gibbon and Fort Egbert, Alaska, and surrounding areas, climate, construction of the forts and telegraph lines, discipline problems, hunting for food, fire fighting, acquisition of supplies, schooling of the men and of Farnsworth's son, Robert, holidays and gifts, and amusements. Later correspondence, up to 1943, consists of letters to and from friends and acquaintances from the Fort Gibbon and Fort Egbert areas. Also included are articles on game hunting by Farnsworth and a historical sketch of Fort Gibbon. The photographs, taken in the years 1899-1901 and 1910-1911, depict life in the region around Forts Gibbon and Egbert. Images include hunting parties, military personnel, fort buildings, scenery, dog sledding, skiing, and steamboats.

Charles Stewart Farnsworth (1862-1955) was born on a farm in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, and raised in Clarion, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating from West Point in 1887, he married Laura Galey, of Clarion, and embarked on a military career. His son Robert was born at Fort Shaw, Montana, in 1888; his wife died there two years later. From 1893 to 1897 he was assigned to teach military science and tactics at the University of North Dakota.
